Show 24 - Minnehaha Memories

Hosted by: Joanna and her mom, Laurie.

Minnehaha
The song, "Minnehaha," by Katy Wehr, inspired us to share our many good memories of times spent at the locations mentioned in her song.

Special thanks to Katy Wehr for sharing her song about Minnehaha!
About Katy:

People and Place. These things are invariable linked with music for singing along with her brother and sister to the pianola in the basement, church hymn-sings, the shared precision and joy of choirs and musical theatre or just making harmonies with mom in the kitchen. Growing up along the banks of the Minnehaha Creek near Minneapolis, Katy found lots to sing about and she was always unconsciously breaking the no-singing-at-the-dinner-table rule.

The Song of Hiawatha
The places mentioned in the song "Minnehaha" were made familiar worldwide by The Song of Hiawatha, written by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Longfellow was an American poet, famous for writing "Paul Revere's Ride."

A short extract of "The Song of Hiawatha" is anthologized under the title "Hiawatha's Childhood."
It is this short extract that begins with the famous lines:

By the shores of Gitche Gumee,
By the shining Big-Sea-Water,
Stood the wigwam of Nokomis,
Daughter of the Moon, Nokomis.
Dark behind it rose the forest,
Rose the black and gloomy pine-trees,
Rose the firs with cones upon them;
Bright before it beat the water,
Beat the clear and sunny water,
Beat the shining Big-Sea-Water.

Saint Anthony Falls on the Mississippi River
Saint Anthony Falls was named for Saint Anthony of Padua, his patron saint, by Father Louis Hennepin in 1680.

Saint Anthony is the patron saint of Padua, as well as Lisbon. He is also remembered as the namesake for the city of San Antonio, Texas; Spanish explorers in the area stopped there on Saint Anthony's feast day ( June 13) in 1691, and named the river and settlement after him.

St. Anthony was in the Franciscan Order, and wanted to follow in the steps of St. Francis of Assisi, whose story is told in the 1972 movie, "Brother Sun, Sister Moon".

The John H. Stevens house was moved, in 1896, with the help of ten thousand school children, to a location near Minnehaha Creek from downtown Minneapolis, near St. Anthony Falls.

Minnehaha Creek, Falls, and Lakes
When Joanna was a little girl, we lived in Orono on the shores of Lake Minnetonka.

In the song, "Minnehaha," the creek begins at Lake Minnetonka and flows down to Minnehaha Falls, located in Minnehaha Park, near the Mississippi River.

Book Links: The Chronicles of Narnia, Little Women, Anne of Green Gables, Little House on the Prairie, Wind in the Willows: Mr. Toad, The Story of Language, The Velveteen Rabbit.

Are You a Literature Abuser? We laugh about this test and the fact that we meet the criteria for Literature Abuse, although we don't feel we abuse literature.

Books We Want to Read We talk about three books on our to-read list: White House Chef, The Seventeen Traditions and Survival of the Sickest: A Medical Maverick Discovers Why We Need Disease.

Books We are Not Planning to Read Although we love most types of books, there is one genre we avoid at all costs: "Bodice-Rippers." We also mention the Bullwer-Lytton Awards.

The AudioPhile Reviews Joanna features two free audio book sites: Librivox and PodioBooks.

Books, Babes and the Internet We mock a common stereotype in the media about women who read, and the assumption that they are "not hot."

Nut of the Week Laurie describes discovering the story about an astronaut arrested at the airport. Needless to say, this story could not go un-lauded on Random Fandom. Joanna tells us about the hilarious episode of Quirky Nomads, called "Love Triangle" posted on the same day the astronaut story broke.

From PenPals to Podcasts: Communication in Many Forms Joanna shares her experiences creating content for the internet, starting with her "Eclectic Magazine" for young people. In 1999 she went on to create her blog, eclectica. Currently, she is host of Random Fandom. Who knows what the future will hold?!

Funky Food We share two "mystery meat" recipes: Brawn and Coconut Beer Batter Spam with Raspberry Horse.

To make up for the horrible recipes above, we provide a wonderful snack recipe: Apricot Nut Supreme Brownies.
